
Resurrection Christian’s Kylee Mayes and Berthoud’s Amelia Major advanced to the third-place match at their respective lines at the Class 3A state tennis tournament held Thursday-Saturday in Colorado Springs.
They both lost those matches.
At No. 1 singles, Mayes defeated Kelly Feng of Fountain Valley (6-1, 6-0) in the first round and Maya Anderson of Prospect Ridge Academy (7-5, 6-1) in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Friday, she lost in the semifinals to Alexa Blanch of Vail Christian (7-5, 6-4) and then defeated Adela Daszuta of Evergreen (6-5, 5-6, 6-2) in the playback semis to advance to third place match to face JoAnna Carter of Severance, who defeated her for the 3A Region 4 title last weekend.
Saturday, Carter defeated Mayes 6-2, 6-3.
At 2 singles, Major defeated Anna Bardeau of Holy Family (6-3, 6-2) in the first round and Kimberly Barker of The Colorado Springs School (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Friday, she lost in the semifinals to Shannon Schmidt of Prospect Ridge Academy (6-1, 6-0) but then defeated Maelys Gibson of Fountain Valley in the playback semis to advance to the third-place match where she lost to Heidi Iverson of Vail Christian 6-1, 6-2.
In Class 4A, Mountain View’s Rebecca Napoliano won her first-round match at No. 1 singles Thursday, defeating Shea Fine-Durbin of Green Mountain in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-1), but she was eliminated later that day by Maridie Schmidt of Grand Junction (6-3, 6-1) in the quarterfinals.
Thompson Valley’s No. 2 doubles team of Gennevieve White and Emma Earhart won their first-round match over Widefield (6-3, 6-0) before losing in the quarterfinals to Cheyenne Mountain (6-2, 6-0). The pair got a playback opportunity and won their first playback over Thomas Jefferson (7-6, 2-6, 6-2) before losing in the playback semis to Mullen (7-5. 6-0).
The Eagles’ other three doubles lines all lost in the first round, while the Loveland 2 doubles pair of Karamea Omlid and Leah Zwahlen also lost in the first round.
Berthoud loses in second round of 3A soccer playoffs
An historic season ended Saturday for the Berthoud girls soccer team in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.
The No. 14 seed Spartans lost to No. 3 Colorado Academy, 7-0, at Colorado Academy, ending the best season in program history for Berthoud.
With a 10-6-1 record, the Spartans finished the season with their best record ever and won what is believed to be their first-ever playoff game in a 2-1 overtime victory over Manitou Springs on Thursday at Max Marr Stadium.
In Class 2A, the Loveland Classical girls advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory over Salida on Saturday at LCS. The No. 7 seed Lions had a bye in the first round and opened their Class 2A title defense in the second round against the No. 10 Spartans.
LCS advanced to face No. 2 Forge Christian on Wednesday.
Mountain View boys go 2-2 at state volleyball tournament
The Mountain View boys volleyball team went 2-2 over three days at the Class 4A state tournament at Fountain-Fort Carson’s Trojan Arena.
No. 3 seed Mountain View opened the tournament Thursday with a three-set victory over No. 6 Colorado Springs Christian.
The Mountain Lions then began Friday with a 3-0 loss to Lutheran. Facing elimination, Mountain View regrouped and stayed alive with a three-set win against league rival Stargate School a few hours later.
However, the Mountain Lions couldn’t stave off elimination a second time and lost to No. 2 Regis Groff (12-25, 33-31, 20-25, 14-25) on Saturday.
Mountain View finished the season with a program-best 23-6 record. The Lions also won their first-ever conference championship by going 14-1 in the Northern 4A League and their first regional championship.
