{"id":1183115,"date":"2026-05-10T08:45:29","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T14:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.reporterherald.com\/?p=1183115"},"modified":"2026-05-08T12:38:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T18:38:13","slug":"pulliam-building-murals-loveland-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reporterherald.com\/2026\/05\/10\/pulliam-building-murals-loveland-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Loveland\u2019s Pulliam Building adds murals inspired by its history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of Loveland\u2019s most iconic buildings now has artwork to match its recent revival.<\/p>\n<p>At the recently renovated Pulliam Community Building, artist Cole Eisenhour has created a series of murals that draw on the building\u2019s 1930s origins, echoing Works Progress Administration-era public art while reflecting the city\u2019s past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did a lot of reading beforehand,\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted to understand the city\u2019s history and the people \u2014 how it was built \u2014 and then try to tell that story through the work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Originally constructed in 1938, the Pulliam Community Building long served as a civic gathering space in Loveland, hosting meetings, events and recreational programs for generations of residents.<\/p>\n<p>After the turn of the century, however, years of wear began to take a toll, as rising maintenance costs and major repair needs threatened to sideline the historic structure.<\/p>\n<p>A community fundraising effort helped turn the tide, leading to extensive renovations and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reporterherald.com\/2025\/11\/08\/loveland-pulliam-community-building-reopening\/\">building\u2019s reopening last November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That renewed life now extends to the building\u2019s walls.<\/p>\n<p>Eisenhour\u2019s murals span three locations in and around the Pulliam, each taking a different stylistic approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt keeps me invigorated as an artist to experiment with different painting approaches and color palettes,\u201d he said. \u201cSome artists get pigeonholed into one style forever. I find that I&#8217;m constantly changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an evocative scene on the second floor, outside the conference rooms, Eisenhour places farmers and foundry workers beneath smokestacks, open sky and rolling clouds, linking the city\u2019s agricultural roots with its industrial growth. A woman\u2019s face in profile anchors the composition, framed by circular panels and stylized floral motifs inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muchafoundation.org\/en\">Alphonse Mucha<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the third mural \u2014 and the only one on the building\u2019s exterior \u2014 Eisenhour returned to his roots, covering the elevator entrance with a blend of abstract and realist imagery that leans more heavily into bold color, geometric forms and movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe exterior piece is closest to what I consider my style,\u201d Eisenhour said. \u201cI don\u2019t like to be pinned down. I like to move around \u2014 it makes me more versatile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the designs are carefully planned, Eisenhour said translating them onto the wall comes with its own challenges. For assistance, he uses modern tools such as projection to map out the basic shapes of his compositions, but said the most difficult part is often getting the colors just right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColor matching is probably the hardest thing,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re trying to take something from a digital reference and recreate it with paint, and sometimes it doesn\u2019t behave the way you expect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, he said the Pulliam project came together smoothly, a reflection of both preparation and experience.
